GRANDVILLE’S SURREAL ILLUSTRATIONS / BOOK EDITION + PRINT Kickstarter Press Release

Greetings from the Ether,

As our Kickstarter reaches the final days, we wanted to give a boost to some other projects you might find of interest, including the Grandville’s Surreal Illustrations Kickstarter that only has a few days left. Tim Hippman is hoping to bring us an inventive illustrations book that will contain the surreal and fantastic Illustrations of J.J. Grandville 1803-1847.

 REWARDS: PAPERBACK BOOK + 1 PRINT // POSTER // TOTE BAG //

Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard was born at Nancy, in northeastern France, to an artistic and theatrical family. The name “Grandville” was his ‘grandparents’ professional stage name. Grandville received his first instruction in drawing from his father, a painter of miniatures.

At the age of twentyone he moved to Paris, and soon afterwards published a collection of lithographs. After the reinstitution of prior censorship of caricature in 1835, Grandville turned almost exclusively to book illustration, supplying illustrations for various standard works, such as Don Quixote, Gulliver’s Travels, Robinson Crusoe.

Though the designs of Grandville are occasionally unnatural and absurd, they usually display keen analysis of character and marvellous inventive ingenuity, and his humour is always tempered and refined by delicacy of sentiment and a vein of sober thoughtfulness. He died on 17 March 1847 in Vanve near Paris.

I started collecting books and drawings of Grandville 8 years ago, when i first looked for Vintage Illustrations with animals. I remembered his drawings on several music records like CD covers of Queen.

I collected Original Books of the 19th century and reprints until the 70ies of the 20th century. They are really amazing. I scanned nearly all pictures from the original old books, since they are printed without any raster dots and started restoring and optimizing the whole range of the “Humanized Animal Characters”. I tried to show the art of his perfect ink illustrations, although a lot of his drawings were reprinted with woodcut from other lithographic artists, who worked for and with him.
